The will enable smaller units in the region to overcome problems posed by inadequate power supply.
The Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) plans to prepare a roadmap of energy-saving techniques for the state’s small and medium enterprise (SME) clusters, which have been complaining about inadequate power supply.
This exercise will be carried out in collaboration with the National Productivity Council (NPC). The energy-saving potential will be studied in five areas — the agricultural sector, the commercial sector, municipalities, SME clusters and the domestic sector.
The study, conducted by NPC on behalf of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) for SMEs in Haryana, estimates the annual energy-saving potential of five SME clusters at 89.715 million units (MU) or 3,621 tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE).
The five SME clusters that have been studied are the plywood cluster in Yamunanagar, the utensils cluster in Jagadhri, the light engineering cluster in Faridabad, the rice mills cluster in Karnal and the powerloom cluster in Panipat.
HAREDA officials said that the next step would be to assess the energy-saving potential in each sub-sector and identify ways in which it can be achieved.
Officials from NPC who undertook the study said that based on it a hired consultant will guide SMEs on ways to implement energy-saving measures.

Deputy Director (Chandigarh), National Productivity Council, S S Bhullar, said that the study could well be an eye-opener for SMEs in the region, because energy savings may enable them to overcome problems posed by power shortages.
By becoming energy-efficient, SMEs will not only be able to cut energy costs, but also become more cost-effective.
