The multilateral Montreal Protocol Fund has sanctioned grant-in-aid to 10 Indian projects to help them eliminate the use of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and switch over to non-CFC based eco-friendly technologies.
The sanctions were granted by the fund's executive committee at its recent meeting at Cairo. The committee is the final authority on fund sanctions to phase out production and use of CFC and other ozone depleting substances that cause global warming, within the timeframe set under the Montreal Protocol of 1987.
The sanctions totalling about $1.4 million envisage reduction of ozone depleting substances by 187 tonne in terms of ozone depleting potentials.
The grants to nine projects will flow through the United Nations Develo-pment Programme and one _ Lal Malhotra & Sons, through the United Nations Industrial Development Or-ganisation. The other two funding agencies are United Nations Environment Pro-gramme and the World Bank.
