Business Standard: What is the present status of the Indian hosiery exports?

S S Goenka: Exports of hosiery and knitted products from India are on an upward trend. Statistics reveal that total exports of hosiery and knitted garments from India in relation to the total garments exports are about 43% quantity wise and about 28% value wise. Figures for 1996-97 are still not fully available but the percentage of knitted garment export is definitely on the higher side.

Even the US, which was a once a reluctant buyer of Indian hosiery and knitted garments, is an eager buyer today. Exports of knitted garments from India to America have increased astronomically. Worldwide, there is a change in fashion with remarkable inclination and preference towards casual wear in relation to the classical wear. Hosiery and knitted garments fit in this slot very easily. The advantages of hosiery and knitted garments in relation to other wears is that they have a soft feel to the body, more casual in appearance and are comparatively cheaper.

With the requirements of consumers increasing day by day, the prospects of a large increase in international demand for hosiery and knitted garments is indisputable.
