The wholesale debt market segment at the National Stock Exchange witnessed active trading volume of Rs 642 crore yesterday. The commercial paper segment contributed volume of Rs 40 crore while the treasury bill segment did not see any buying interest.
"The market saw massive buying interest for medium-term paper as there was excess liquidity in the system," said a dealer at the bank. The 11.55 per cent government loan maturing on 2001 saw 22 trades amounting to volume of Rs 115 crore. The paper was traded at the weighted average yield of 11.39 per cent, for a low of Rs 100.25, high of Rs 100.32 and closed at Rs 100.30.
The newly issued 11.68 per cent government loan maturing on 2002 saw eight trades and a volume of Rs 50 crore. The paper was traded at the weighted average yield of 11.60 per cent, for a low of Rs 100.17, high of Rs 100.23 and closed at Rs 100.21. The 12.5 per cent government loan maturing on 2004 saw seven trades for Rs 45 crore at the weighted average yield of 11.86 per cent. The paper was traded for a low of Rs 102.40, touched a high of Rs 102.50 before closing at Rs 102.48. The commercial paper of Finolex Cables maturing on October 15, 1998 saw volume of Rs 10 crore at the yield of 9.25 per cent.
