The government has decided to demerge the four subsidiaries of the General Insurance Corporation and turn them into separate non-life insurance companies.
Finance ministry sources said the matter will shortly be taken up by the Union Cabinet after a formal clearance by the finance minister Yashwant Sinha. They added that a decision on demerging the four subsidiaries was taken last month along with the decision to turn GIC into a reinsurance company
