About 18 per cent of the 143 people interviewed in all the metros said bribes were paid for telecom contracts. To a question what should be done with the contracts already awarded, a 57 per cent of them said only contracts involved in the scam should be cancelled.

However, 34 per cent of the respondents maintained all contracts should be cancelled and fresh tenders issued. A nine per cent of them felt no contracts should be cancelled as the country would lose out on time.

Regarding Sukh Ram's fate, in whose house the CBI seized Rs 3.3 crore, three-fourth of the respondents felt the former minister will effectively get away with it.

A 30 per cent of the respondents said he would not be convicted at all; 43 per cent said he would get a minor sentence. About 22 per cent said he would get a harsher sentence.

On CBI investigation into corruption among public servants, 56 per cent of the respondents said it would have no impact on public servants at all. Thirty-eight per cent, however, felt corruption would gradually decrease.

There is a general disillusionment among people on corruption. But, most felt in the long run, if India continues along the path of liberalisation, there is a chance that things may improve.
