APTRANSCO's CMD, Anil Kumar Kutty, has exhorted the managing directors of the four distribution companies to curb pilferage of energy. Kutty suggested losses in municipalities and towns be regularly monitored so as to bring them down to 10 per cent or even less.

The four distribution companies have launched district wise detection of pilferage of energy (DPE) divisions. Special instructions have been issued to the operation wing and anti power theft squad to further intensify the inspections every week in each division by pooling staff.

Under Shaktiman scheme that was launched with much expectation in December 1999, offering rewards to informants of power pilferage, 5652 cases were reported. Of which 5602 cases were inspected and 2271 cases were booked with an assessed amount of Rs 1.57 crore. The main objective of the scheme is to make honest consumers themselves expose the malpractices of erring consumers.
