The government has constituted an inter departmental group to achieve better coordination on issues relating to the World Trade Organisation. The group is to be headed by commerce secretary P P Prabhu.
The mandate of the nine member WTO coordinating group will be to ensure effective preparation on all major issues; prepare recommendations on India's negotiating strategy; develop a consensus on the position on WTO issues. The group will also deal with all WTO related aspects of India's relation with foreign countries.
The WTO coordinating group includes Secretaries of the Agriculture,Economic Relations, Finance, Industry, Law and Textiles ministries. It also includes the Secretary to the Prime Minister and the Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.
