It has been a long wait for fans of the annual Delhi Comic Con, last held in February 2014. This year’s event, being held between December 4 and 6, is back with a certain bang. Headlining the event would be some international guests, including Kristian Nairn, the Irish actor and DJ who plays the character of Hodor in the popular television series, Game of Thrones.

Nairn, who has attended several comic conventions, says that he agreed to be at Delhi Comic Con this year because it is “an amazing way to talk to and hear from fans of the show and interact with them”. “It’s one of my favourite parts of the job actually,” he says over email.

When asked if he was a regular at comic cons and what was his favourite comic or character, Nairn says: “I’m a big sci-fi and fantasy fan, so it’s always a huge buzz to be at these events. I’m really into The Flash, and the upcoming DC comics’ Justice League stuff. I’m also very excited to see Marvel’s Dr Strange!”

And what about the popularity of his show in India?  “It always humbles me when I arrive in a country I haven’t been to before and I find out how big the show is there.  Truly, we never expected it to get this big when we started out. I’m so glad people enjoy it  in India, and I can’t wait to talk to the show’s fans about it,” he says.

Besides Nairn, this edition of the Delhi Comic Con will see Rob Denbleyker, one of the authors of the popular Web comic, Cyanide & Happiness. Also in attendance would be Ty Templeton, a Canadian comic book artist and writer, and the creator of the cult favourite Stig’s Inferno (now available free online), a parody of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Not surprisingly, on his website, www.tytempleton.com, the latest strip of Bun Toons talks about his upcoming trip to India and a tongue-in-cheek look at the do’s and don’ts most western travellers are believed to follow.

Fans can also look forward to meeting Dinesh Shamdasani, the chief executive officer and chief creative officer of the New York-based Valiant Entertainment, who are behind characters such as X-O Manowar, Bloodshot, Shadowman, Eternal Warrior.

And if it’s a comic con, there has to be cosplay, right? Yes, it’s that crazy ritual when you dress up as your favourite character. This time, there are several more prizes to be won than the previous edition. In fact, one winner will be chosen from each of these categories — comic book or graphic novel, animated series, movie, manga or anime, sci-fi or fantasy and gaming — each day. That’s 15 prizes up for grabs during the three days of the event. And the winner of each day gets a ticket to the Beijing Comic Con.

One can also look forward to exclusive comic book launches and gaming activities. For those who love to sketch, there will be an artists’ alley, where one can interact with artists, illustrators and designers. Those attending this year’s event include Abhijeet Kini, Saumin Suresh Patel, Reshmi Chandrashekhar, Nikhil Das Gupta, Raviraj Naik, Parth Kothekar and Marcus Santiago, among others.

Activities planned also include experience zones, fan sessions, specialist panels, autographing sessions and gaming tournaments, along with the usual snazzy comic book and pop culture merchandise.
