Corporate networking service provider Comsat Max yesterday launched GlobalWay a platform for its new Internet virtual private network (VPN) service, Comsat VPN. The company expects this to contribute to around 30 per cent of revenues this fiscal. It is targetting revenues of Rs 65 crore in 2000-01.

The service will only be provided to corporates and will enable them to connect their various offices in a secure environment, the company said. "In India, many corporations have set up offices and plants in remote locations. Through GlobalWay, Comsat Max is the only provider that delivers a complete array of internet, VPN and VSAT solutions that gives customers high-quality, seamless connections to all their offices, regardless of the location," said Sudipta Sen, chief executive officer, Comsat Max. The company has already secured two firm orders for GlobalWay, he said.

"Our new IP-based services package is designed to meet the rapidly evolving communications requirements of customers across the country. GlobalWay gives our customers a competitive edge via Virtual Private Networks along with a wide array of internet services," said James J Welch, president and general manager of Comsat International.

Comsat Max is a 51:49 joint venture between Comsat International and Max India with the latter holding the majority stake. Responding to queries on Comsat Corporation's (the parent company of Comsat International) proposed merger with satellite manufacturer

Lockheed Martin, Welch said there would be no negative impact of the merger on the Indian operations and Comsat Max would continue operate here.

The company is also not planning an initial public offering, Sen said. He maintained that any future investments could be financed through equity or loans from the current shareholders.

Comsat Max is setting up eight international gateways of which it has received government approval for five. These will come up at Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Pune. Up until now, the company has invested Rs 12 crore in the gateways project.
