The West Bengal Assembly yesterday rejected the Oppo-sitions demand for a House committee probe into Mondays book fair fire following uproarious scenes which forced the adjournment of the House for 10 minutes .

Rejecting the Congress (I) demand for a House committee to probe the incident, Home (police) minister Buddhadev Bhatt-acharya said that the government had already set up an inquiry committee under the home secretary to ascertain the cause of the fire.

As soon as Tapati Roy of the CPI (M) rose to participate in the discussion there was a commotion in the House. When Congress (I) MLA Subrata Mukherjee ignored repeated requests by the speaker, H A Halim, to allow the House to function, the speaker suspended him and asked the marshal to evict him from the House.

The speaker later withdrew the suspension order on Mukherjee following a request by the members of the House.
