European cinema, electro-pop and food festivals to enliven your weekend

If you are in Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore, here are some suggestions which might come handy over the next three days

Naga treats: Dzukou Tribal Kitchen is hosting the Naga Awoshi Food Festival to showcase unique pork dishes cooked in Naga style. On the elaborate menu will be dishes such as Pork Head, Pork Tongue, Pork Ears, Pork Chops, Spare Ribs, Pork Belly, Brain Chutney, Skin Crackers, Pork Salad and Pork Tail among others.

For lovers of vintage: National Film Archive of India, Pune is showcasing an interesting exhibition featuring film posters titled Rhythm, Raga and Melody. The collection will include some of the rare posters from the movie industry. It will also track the history of poster making from black and white to colour and digital format.

Music

  Digital disco: Digital Mela at Summer House Cafe is back with its second edition. This time the evening will feature performances by Mista Savona, Delhi Sultanate and Begum X. Mista Savona is a reggae, dancehall and bass producer from Australia who hit it big with performances at Glastonbury, Sun Ska and One Love. Delhi Sultanate and Begum X are the solo projects of the lead singers of The Ska Vengers. Two of the most popular exponents of the soundsystem culture in the country, they will be playing a vinyl set before Savona’s performance.

Film

A classic rendition: Directed by Benedict Andrews and starring Gillian Anderson, Clare Burt and Lachele Carl, A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams is a drama about two sisters. As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace -- but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski.

MUMBAI

Art

In the artist’s hands:
  At the newly opened Gallery Odyssey, see a solo show of works by Lorenzo Quinn. The artist often sculpts the human hand because it is considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body. “The hand holds so much power – the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy,” Quinn noted in a press statement.

Paint me a passage: Passages from Reclusive Conversations is a new show of Mahesh Baliga’s works. The artist likes to make allegorical paintings that subvert the regular understanding of everyday objects or scenarios. His work explores paradoxes like the fact that the quest for order often ends in disorder.

Music

Pop, rock and blues:
‘Mad Men Rocketh’ will feature music acts Laxmi Bomb, a newly formed electropop outfit. Also part of the lineup will be Twist to Break Seal, which has a sound that marries classic and alt rock, and Wanted Yesterday, a blues band comprised of admen.

Film

Cinema of Europe: The 20th European Union Film Festival (EUFF), which is travelling to various cities, will halt at Mumbai to screen a collection of 21 award-winning European films in different genres. The mix includes Dutch, Hungarian, Swedish, Slovenian, Polish and Spanish cinema. Among the offerings is Netherlands’ Soof and Sweden’s The Last Sentence.

Food

Mumbai food fest: Organised by Small Fry Co, Bombay Local, “a homegrown food festival” will feature 60 local stalls, pop-up studios, installations, workshops and performances.  The offerings will include a lifestyle bazaar, pop-up studio by LFW Designer Salita Nanda, a performance stage curated by insider.in with panel discussions and stand-up comedy.

BANGALORE

Theatre

Comedy of errors: Into The Purple Sunset is a collection of tragi-comic sketches by British playwright David Campton. The plays include "The Smell of Burning", a take on civil unrest and the ignorance of the general public, and "Out of the Flyingpan," the twists in signing a diplomatic treaty, where the two diplomats try to get the most of the treaty, which eventually spirals into a new war. The plays will be performed by a cast from different backgrounds including an engineer, lawyer and designer.

Music

Global sounds, Indian roots: "We're like so many things you've heard before. And like nothing you've heard before." Oorali describe themselves as a band with a sound that's hard to define, vaguely familiar yet very different, "open to influences from all over the world... yet completely rooted in the Indian experience" They sing in Malayalam, English and Spanish and you can check them out this Friday, and decide for yourself.

Art

Mixed media: "In Other Rooms", a group show features a range of media including painting, sculpture, photography and installations by Martand Khosla, Suchender P, Masooma Syed and Avinash Veeraraghavan.
