The National Stock Exchange 50 index shot up by 23.9 points as against the previous close of 968.85 points, a gain of 2.46 per cent. The index opened at 972.35 points, touched a high of 994.05 points and fell to a low of 972.05, before closing at 992.75.
The Midcap index, closed at 1052.79 points, a gain of 23.32 points as against the previous close of 1029.47. Informed sources said the market closed higher on the hope of a positive Budget. There has been some genuine buying from both domestic and foreign institutions. But the FIIs do not have much hope from the Budget. said a dealer with a foreign brokerage.
The total traded value on the exchange stood at Rs 1260.25 crore, while the total traded quantity went up to 5.61 crore and the number of trades stood at 138406. For a change, the SBI scrip hogged the limelight replacing ITC. The SBI scrip topped the list of shares of maximum volumes.

On the other hand the top five gainers on the exchange were: Stilbene Chemicals Ltd (Rs 15.15 crore), Celeste International Ltd (Rs 14.81 crore), Asian Consolidate Indust (Rs 14.75 crore), National Steel Industries (Rs 14.49 crore), Unipals Ltd (Rs 14.47 crore).
The top five losers on the exchange were: Standard Industries, Viniyoga Clothex, Motorl (I) Ltd, Modi Telefibers Ltd and Northland Sugar.
