Privatisation of power distribution in Kanpur is likely to be delayed. Under the original schedule chalked out the entire programme was to be completed by the end of this month.

Power industry sources now say that the programme is likely to be completed only by end March 2000. The basic reason for the delay is a provision in the Electricty Supply Act.

"The Uttar Pradesh government had given the go ahead for the privatisation programme under Section 28 of the Act. The government is now planning to give fresh permission under Section 3 of the Act. This will cause the delay, " power industry sources said.
