The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has asked the government to declare tourism an infrastructure industry. This will enable the industry to become globally competitive with access to low cost capital, technology and resources, the Chamber said in a statement yesterday.
The CII has also suggested the creation of a National Tourism Authority, an inter-ministerial and a state-level coordination committee.
"The industry should become more consumer friendly," it added. "It should find out tourist requirements and then provide a suitable, exotic package," it said.
Improving customer services like travel facilities has been emphasised by the CII. The CII has suggested privatisation of air travel, increase frequency and reduction of the costs of air travel. It has stressed the importance of rationalisation of travel documentation and visa facilitation process and other improvements in railway services.
