An upward-to-firm trend continued in groundnut oil while most other edible oils ruled easy-to-subdued at the wholesale oils and oilseeds market here yesterday. Imported palmolein ruled firm.
In the futures market, the September '98 contract remained untraded while the December '98 contract opened lower and traded steady towards closing. Groundnut oil firmed up further by Rs 10 at Rs 575 per 10 kg.
Castor oil commercial and BSS fell further by Rs 17 each to Rs 495 and Rs 507 per 10 kg respectively. Kardi oil and sunflower oil expeller looked up by Rs 10 and Rs 7 to Rs 650 and Rs 435 per 10 kg respectively. Ricebran oil firmed up further by Rs 3 to Rs 248 per 10 kg, while karanji oil eased by Rs 3 to Rs 227 per 10 kg. Imported palmolein hardened by Rs 5 at Rs 383 per 10 kg. The majority of other oils ruled overall steady.

In futures, the December contract opened Rs 11 lower at Rs 1,845 a quintal and firmed up to Rs 1858. It declined to Rs 1,842 before closing to Rs 1,845.
In oilseeds, castorseeds Madras and Maharashtra declined by Rs 82 each to Rs 2,280 and Rs 2,274 a quintal. Nigerseeds Madras declined by Rs 25 at Rs 1,975 a quintal. All other oilseeds ruled overall steady.
Sugar: A subdued-to-easy trend was seen in sugar. Both grades ruled subdued. The market undertone was weak.
S-30 was traded at Rs 1,400/1,430 a quintal from the previous Rs 1,318/1,435. M-30 hardened to Rs 1,435/1,500 a quintal against the previous close of Rs 1430/1515.
Sugar for the check-post deliveries were quoted lower at Rs 1388/1400 a quintal for S-30 and Rs 1,412/1,425 for M-30.
Non-ferrous metals: An easy-to-steady condition was evident on the local non-ferrous metals market. The scraps section ruled weak while virgin metals ruled steady. The undertone remained weak. In scraps, copper heavy declined by 75 paise while copper and brass utensils and brass sheetcuttings eased by 25 paise each to Rs 105.25, Rs 93.25, Rs 86.25 and Rs 88.25 a kg respectively. Aluminium utensils ruled overall steady and were quoted at Rs 63.50 a kg.
Copper wirebar softened by 50 paise at Rs 118.50 a kg. Tin slabs improved by Rs 3 at Rs 375 a kg. All other metals ruled overall steady. Aluminium ingots was quoted at Rs 86, zinc slabs Rs 79.50, lead ingots Rs 45.50, and nickel cathodes at Rs 248 a kg.
Bullion: An easy-to-weak condition was noticed in both precious metals.
Silver .999 was quoted at Rs 7500 a kg; while silver .916 firmed up marginally by Rs 10 to Rs 7400 a kg. Delhi advices too indicated a steady trend. Standard gold and .22 carat eased by Rs 10 and Rs 20 to Rs 4,230 and Rs 3,910 per 10 grammes. Gold biscuit prices fell by Rs 300 at Rs 49,900.
