Noida Development Authority officials said the institution has been shown two locations for the proposed campus - in Okhla Barrage Road where the authority has a 200 acre plot and in Sector 62, which has been earmarked as institutional area under the Noida master plan.

V S Raju, IIT director, has already approached the human resource development ministry for the new campus. The director said the creation of a second campus cannot be postponed even because of the financial crunch because of the urgent need to provide increased manpower through the IIT system.

The 320-acre IIT campus in Delhi does not have any scope for further expansion.

The proposed campus will have facilities to teach first and second year students and will be equipped with physics and chemistry laboratories.

There are also plans to develop a research park near the new campus. Ravi Mathur, chief executive officer, Noida Autho- rity, told Business Standard the research facilities at the park will be financed by the local industrial units. IIT will provide technology competence required for the projects.

Raju is keen to set up the campus in Noida because of its closeness to the present campus. As faculty members have to conduct classes in both the campuses, proximity will be an important considertion in selecting the site.

He said Noida has the required social and community infrastructure which will be useful for the staff and students. IIT proposes to locate student's hostels and staff quarters in the new campus.

According to present estimates, about 150 acres of land will be required for its plans to develop the campus over the next 30 to 40 years.

IIT has immediate plans to double the number of students from the present 450 a year.

V Rajgopalan, additional CEO, Noida, said the authority is in a position to act immediately after the IIT firms up its decision on the site.

Ravi Mathur, chief executive officer, IIT, will approach the state government through the Union human resources ministry to finalise the allotment and cost.

He said the cost of the land will be about Rs 250 per square metre. Going by the present estimate, the total cost will be about Rs 12 crore.

Mathur said the location of the IIT campus in Noida would benefit the industrial units here. The proposed research park, he said, would enable the units to work in cooperation with the IIT faculty to develop new technologies.
