Continuing on its upward trend, the annual point to point rate of inflation rose to 6.38 per cent for the week ending May 13. Wholesale price index (WPI) based inflation rose by 0.07 percentage points over the week to touch a 74 week high.
While the WPI remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 151.7 (provisional), the rate of inflation rose for the second consecutive week, after dipping to 5.94 per cent for the week ending April 29. Inflation was 3.18 per cent in the corresponding week in the previous year.
The annual rate of inflation based on the final wholesale price index for `all commodities' (base 1993-94=100) was reported at 5.37 per cent for the week ending March 18 as against 3.95 per cent calculated on the basis of the provisional index.

Inflation rose 51 per cent from 4.22 for the week ending April 1 to 6.38 for the week ending May 13. At a disaggregated level, the index for primary articles rose 0.1 per cent over the previous week, while the index for manufactured products fell 0.1 per cent.
Within the group of primary articles, the index for food articles fell 0.1 percent while that for non-food articles rose 0.3 per cent due to higher prices of raw tobacco (10 per cent).
