Congress president Sitaram Kesri yesterday asked the United Front to choose a new leader so that his party can extend support to a new Front government, conceding that its claim for power was over.

All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Oscar Fernandes said the Congress president made these remarks to an informal gathering of party MPs and MLAs at his residence yesterday morning.

Fernandes said his party has already communicated to the front to elect a new leader and we will support it in forming government.

He quoted Kesri as saying that he was not in the race for Prime Ministership.

Asked whether the Congress would join a Front government or support it from outside, he said it was for the party chief, Sitaram Kesri, to decide. Kesri has made three things clear no question of going to the polls, he was not a contender for any office and that the Front should elect a new leader and we will support it in forming government, he said.
