The government has decided to nominate A M Khusro as the chairman of the 11th Finance Commission, the terms of reference of which were set out on Thursday.

The notification in this regard will be put out by the government very shortly, sources said. The chairman's name, it is learnt, was cleared by finance minister Yashwant Sinha a fortnight ago.

A M Khusro is known for original work in the field of farm size and productivity besides holding a variety of positions. He is currently chairman of the Institute of Economic Growth.

He is mostly known as a realistic, middle-of-the-road economist with agriculture economics as his area of specialisation. The BJP-led government preferred him over other contenders, including Raja Chelliah and T N Chaturvedi for the post, sources said.
