On an average, annually 7.21 million hectares of land is affected; over 1,600 lives are lost; 32.42 million people affected; crops worth Rs 1,117.8 crore and over 5,600 houses damaged. The frequency of major floods is more than once in five years.
In 2015, parts of Gujarat, Assam and Manipur were affected by floods. According to a UN ESCAP (Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) report, in 2014, floods in northern India and Cyclone Hudhud led to 1,301 deaths and loss of property worth $27 billion.
