Minimum Wage Of Rs 125 Per Day Suggested In Unorganised Sector

The National Centre for Labour (NCL) has recommended a minimum wage of Rs 125-Rs 150 per day and employment for 250 days per year for workers in the unorganised sector.

Announcing the launch of the minimum wage campaign, secretary of the centre D Thankappan told newspersons yesterday that efforts will be made to focus on the plight of 300 million unorganised workers.

He said minimum standard for sustenance should be granted for unorganised labour.

National Centre for Labour activist and Self-employed Womens Association (Sewa) coordinator Rennan Jhabvala pointed out that child labour can be eliminated only if minimum needs of their parents are guaranteed.

 

She said the National Centre for Labour has sought at least three consumption units for one wage earner, minimum food requirement of 2,700 calories per average Indian adult, clothing requirement of 72 yards per annum per family, rent corresponding to the minimum area provided for under governments industrial housing scheme and fuel, lighting and other items of expenditure should constitute 20 per cent of the total minimum wage.

Womens Voice activist Ruth Manorama said the plight of domestic women workers was extremely bad and sought a better deal for them.

National secretariat member of the National Centre for Labour N P Samy said minim wages should be implemented for all categories of unorganised labour and it should be linked to consumer price index with 100 per cent neutralisation.
