Having agreed to permit second-hand car imports, the commerce ministry is in favour of using non-tariff barriers to keep a check on the import of used cars.

Speaking to Business Standard, minister of state for commerce and industry Omar Abdullah said his ministry has made a case for protection of the domestic car industry where over Rs 50,000 crore has been invested.

Sources said the commerce ministry has made its point-of-view known in the note sent to the ministry of heavy industry which is drafting the new auto policy. The policy is expected to be announced in January next year.
