Eckhard Pfeiffer, the former chief executive of Compaq Computer, who was dismissed by its board in April, has been named chairman of Intershop Communications, a growing e-commerce company.

Founded in Jene, Germany, Intershop now exployees about 500 people with its head-quarter in San Francisco. The company made a splash this summer with a print advertising campaign that poked fun at IBM, one of its main rivals.

According to Pfeiffer, who is German, he will not be the day-to-day, hands on manager at Intershop, but will provide an extensive advisory role to the company's mangement team. and Economic Services Ltd (RITES) has bagged new contracts worth Rs 210 crore in 1998-99, a 79% increase over contracts secured in the previous year. RITES has posted a turnover of Rs 142 crore in 1998-99, against the previous year's Rs 133 crore. The company has declared a dividend of 100%. Speaking to share holders at the annual general meeting, RITES chairman G K Mallhotra said the organisation had secured contracts in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Botswana, Malaysia, Mozambique, Myanmar, Philippines, Tanzania, Vietnam and Zambia.">
