Mtnl Pays Rs 78 Crore Dividend

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) presented the Union government with a Rs 78-crore dividend cheque at a function here yesterday.

The cheque was handed over by chairman and managing director N S Ramachandran to communications minister Beni Prasad Verma.

Addressing a 300-strong gathering, Verma commended MTNL employees saying the companys performance was better than that of department of telecommunications cirlce operations. Exhorting MTNL staff to perform better, he noted that the challenge is to meet the competition in the present environment from private and foreign investors.

Later, top company officials sought to allay fears that there would be a slowdown in the growth of operating margins of blue-chip telecom PSUs.
