Nabisco Earns $103 Million In Quarter

Nabisco Holdings Corp. said Monday it earned $103 million in its second quarter, up from a loss of $216 million a year earlier when the company took a one-time restructuring charge of $438 million. Nabisco, maker of such products as Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookies, Ritz crackers, Grey Poupon mustard and other snacks and condiments, said excluding the year-earlier charge for restructuring, the companys income increased by 13 percent. Nabisco said it earned $103 million, or 38 cents a share, on sales of $1.87 billion. Including the one-time restructuring charge, Nabisco lost $216 million, or 81 cents a share, on sales of $1.89 billion, in the same period of 1996. The company said overall domestic sales increased by 1 percent during the quarter, and international sales increased by 2 percent.
