Solana said the US attack on targets in Iraq was a justified, measured and proportionate response to violations of United Nation orders.
He called on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to stop attacks in the region and comply with UN resolutions.
Iraq has once again blatantly and gravely violated UN Security Council resolutions and mounted an agressive attack against civilians inside the exclusion zone in northern Iraq, Solana said.
Against this background the US action this morning was a justified, measured and proportionate reaction.
I hope that this clear message will be heeded by Saddam Hussein and that he will immediately withdraw his forces from the area, stop any further brutal attacks, and comply fully with UN resolutions.
