Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), in its ongoing freight rationalisation drive, has kicked off a programme to switch over from panamax to cape-size vessels for importing its annual coking coal requirement of 6 million tonne.

The public sector steel major has started using cape-size vessels on an experimental basis and an initial consignment of 1.8 lakh tonne of coking coal was successfully shipped in at the Vishakapatnam port last fortnight.
