The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation registered a 4.7 per cent increase in its turnover to Rs 533 crore in 1996-97 from Rs 509 crore in 1995-96. Its profit increased to Rs 91 crore from Rs 82 crore in the previous year. According to a press release issued in New Delhi yesterday, completion of the 4x120 mw Uri hydroelectric project was the biggest success story of NHPC in 1996-97. The project was completed in five years despite disturbed law and order in Jammu and Kashmir. Other accomplishments of NHPC in 1996-97 included the long-awaited increase in the authorised share capital to Rs 3,500 crore, award of contract for the remaining civil works for the 390-mw Dulhasti hydroelectric project, full generation from Salal II and bagging the 510-mw Teesta V in Sikkim for execution.
