Nintendo Co Ltd, a top maker of home video game machines, said yesterday that the announced merger between Sega Enterprises and Bandai Co posed no worries for its business.
"Sega's sales are above ours but most of those came from commercial-use game equipment and not much of the profits came from home-use. It also recently announced lower profits.
Bandai, meanwhile, mainly focuses on toys," a Nintendo spokesman told Reuters. "We have no worries." Asked whether Nintendo, which is a major force in the Japanese home-use video game market, is considering any
possible tie-ups or mergers, he said: "We still believe a slim company is one of our selling points."
Sony President Nobuyuki Idei, meanwhile, expressed surprise at the merger announcement.
"I never expected such a combination of the two companies, so I'm very surprised," Idei said.
