Pakistan plans to export 3,00,000 tonne of sugar, most of it to India, commerce minister Ishaq Dar said on Tuesday. He told a news conference that the government expected to have an exportable surplus of 6,00,000 to 8,00,000 tonne of sugar in fiscal 1997-98 (July-June) from an estimated production of 3.4 million tonne but had initially allowed the export of 3,00,000 tonne. Dar said the Pakistani mills had already produced 1.7 million tonne of sugar, and were expected to produce another 1.6-1.7 million tonne in the next few months.
