Precious Metals Decline, G'Nut Oil Follows Suit

An easy trend prevailed in groundnut oil yesterday while most other edible oils ruled easy-to-subdued at the wholesale oils and oilseeds market.

In futures, September '98 contract was untraded, while the December '98 contract opened lower and receded further towards closing.

Groundnut oil eased by Rs 2 at Rs 563 per 10 kg on sluggish demand against modest arrivals. Castor oil commercial and BSS qualities declined further by Rs 17 each to Rs 516 and Rs 528 per 10 kg respectively.

Linseed and mowra oils looked up by Rs 5 each to Rs 450 and Rs 355 per 10 kg respectively while sesame oil firmed up by Rs 10 to Rs 450 per 10 kg.

 

Ricebran oil eased by Rs 3 to Rs 243 per 10 kg. Imported palmolein firmed up by Re 1 at Rs 376 per 10 kg.

In futures, December contract opened Rs 10 lower at Rs 1,860 a quintal and firmed up to Rs 1862 a quintal. It declined to Rs 1840 before closing to Rs 1862 a quintal.

Castorseeds Madras and Maharashtra qualities declined by Rs 81 each to Rs 2,381 and Rs 2,375 a quintal respectively.

Sugar: A better-to-firm trend was seen yesterday with both grades ruling marginally firm. The undertone of the market was weak.

S-30 firmed up to Rs 1415/1440 a quintal from the previous level of Rs 1405/1445 on moderate consumer demand against easy supplies.

Similarly, M-30 hardened to Rs 1435/1532 (Rs 1430/1528) a quintal.

Sugar for check-post deliveries was quoted lower at Rs 1389/1400 a quintal for S-30 and Rs 1415/1425 a quintal for M-30.

Non-ferrous metals : Easy-to-steady conditions prevailed. Scraps ruled weak while virgin metals were steady.

In scraps, copper heavy declined by 50 paise while copper utensils, brass utensils and brass sheetcuttings eased by 25 paise each to Rs 106, Rs 93.50, Rs 86.50 and Rs 88.50 a kg respectively on dull industrial enquires. Aluminium utensils were nominally quoted at Rs 63.50 a kg.

In the virgin section, copper wire bar softened by 50 paise at Rs 119 a kg on reduced industrial demand against easy inflows. Aluminium ingots was quoted at Rs 86, zinc slabs Rs 79.50, lead ingots Rs 45.50, tin slabs Rs 372 and nickel cathodes Rs 248 a kg.

Bullion: Weak conditions were noticed with demand subdued on account of the slack season. Silver .999 and .916 declined by Rs 40 and Rs 50 to Rs 7540 and Rs 7425 a kg respectively.

Standard gold and 22 carat gold eased by Rs 35 and Rs 30 to Rs 4225 and Rs 3910 per 10 grams respectively on dull overseas advices.

Gold biscuits prices declined by Rs 300 at Rs 50,000 per piece.
