The government has cleared private sector road projects totalling Rs 200 crore while projects amounting to Rs 600 crore is in the pipeline, minister for surface transport T G Venkatraman said yesterday. This is out of the Rs 1900 crore worth proposals received.

The remaining projects are in various stages of approval.

This recent spate of clearances have been largely due to the transparent and competitive process regarding private participation in the roads sector, he said in his inaugural address at the two-day 13th National Convention of Civil Engineers on Infrastructure Development Strategy for the Transport Sector.

He said the government was concentrating on high density corridors linking the four metros.

The government was developing four-lane sections under external aid, normal budgetary funding and private sector participation, he said adding that regardless of the nature of funding, the four-lane sections will be tolled to generate further funds for developing national highways.
