Moving beyond the personal computer to information appliances and platforms and universal computing seems to be taking a major place in research plans of computer companies, as was evident at the mother of all IT shows,Comdex/Fall '99, held in Las Vegas from November 15 through 19.
The IT exhibition showcased not only new products and innovative technologies, which could change the Indian IT segment, but also highlighted the need for Indian companies to participate in such shows.
"The companies that exhibited at the show got an exposure to the world market. They were also exposed to the technological revolutions that are taking place worldwide," pointed out Dewang Mehta, president of National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom)

The Nasscom India Pavilion at Comdex '99, the theme for which was `India Software @ speed dotcom', housed six companies, including Akshay Software Technologies, Aptech Ltd, Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Kaneriya Computer Consultants, SRM Systems and Software and Infrasoft Ltd.
According to Sanjeev Chawla, vice-president of River Run, a mobile computing software company, Comdex was a good place for Indian companies to learn about technological developments. Interestingly, Comdex attracted lot of Indian visitors, though not exhibitors, he pointed out.
