Scrips Firm Up On Purchases By Domestic Institutions

The trading sentiment on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) firmed up further mainly on account of purchases made by the domestic institutions. The 50-share NSE index closed at 1,149.25 points, a gain of 12.10 points over the previous close of 1,137.15 points. The Nifty opened at 1,137.20, went to a high of 1,152.30, dipped to a low of 1,137.20 points before closing at 1,149.25.

The Midcap index closed at 1,279.90 points over the previous close of 1,265.80, a gain of 14.10 points. The total trading turnover at the exchange touched Rs 1,853.19 crore with over 6.36 crore shares changing hands. There was less of FII selling which also lent indirect support to the market. The market also went up in anticipation of the badla being introduced back in its original form, which firmed up the sentiment.

 

Tata Tea hogged the limelight and the scrip closed at Rs 463.60 against the previous close of Rs 436.30, a gain of 6.26 per cent. The total traded turnover touched Rs 384.18 crore. The scrip remained extremely volatile during intra-day trading. Among other gainers were, GE Shipping at Rs 49 against previous close of Rs 45.90, Essar Steel at Rs 26 (Rs 24.45), Reliance Capital at Rs 83.90 (Rs 79.80) and ACC at Rs 1303.30 (Rs 1257.80).

Arvind Mills continued its downward trend closing at Rs 102.75 (Rs 106.35). Among other major losers were HLL at Rs 1,390.60 (Rs 1,400), Andhra Valley at Rs 94.85 (Rs 95.40), Castrol at Rs 656.05 (Rs 659.25) and HDFC at Rs 3,460.10 (Rs 3,476.20).

The ITC scrip topped the list of securities with highest turnover. The scrip closed at Rs 544.60 over the previous close of Rs 538.25 with the total trading turnover touching Rs 506.24 crore. The Reliance counter witnessed a total trading turnover of Rs 291.80 crore and the scrip closed at Rs 345.40 against the previous close of Rs 344.30.
