Scrips Remain Lacklustre On Lack Of Buying Activity

The trading sentiment on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday remained lacklustre due to lack of buying support from the FIIs. The 50- share index closed at 1,181.50 points against the previous close of 1,198.20 points, registering a loss of 16.70 points.

The total traded turnover also remained low . It touched Rs 1,400.20 crore with only 5.21 crore shares changing hands. According to sources, the FIIs were selling at select counters while domestic institutions picked up scrips at lower levels. The FIIs are holding on and they are not willing to take a plunge into the market for the moment. With a spate of holidays still round the corner players are willing to take fresh positions, informed a NSE dealer.

 

The Nifty opened at 1,198.80, went to high of 1,212.15, dipped to a low of 1,179.30 before closing at 1,181.50 points. The Midcap index closed at 1,311.45 points over the previous close of 1,328.30, registering a loss of 16.85 points. Market sources said the lack of trading interest is due to the uncertainty prevailing in the market over the rupee devaluation.

Among the top five losers were, Cochin Refineries, which closed at Rs 148.65 (Rs 147.25), Baja Auto at Rs 854.95 (Rs 847.20), Indian Hotel at Rs 600 (Rs 599), Andhra Valley at Rs 95.15 (Rs 95.05) and East India Hotel at Rs 392.55 (Rs 392.25).

The gain seen were very modest, however, the fall in the share prices were sharp. Among the top five losers were, Tisco at Rs 196.40 (Rs 205.30), Gujarat Ambuja at Rs 324.15 (Rs 338.25), ABB at Rs 625.45 (Rs 650.55), Nestle at Rs 270.10 (Rs 280.90) and Thermax at Rs 348.15 (Rs 360.60).

The ITC counter witnessed hectic activity and the scrip closed at Rs 535.10 over the previous close of Rs 545.25. The total traded turnover at the counter touched Rs 319.08 crore. The SBI counter witnessed a turnover of Rs 235.65 crore.
