The Union finance secretary Piyush G Mankad stressed on the need for state-level reforms in order to enhance the overall economic liberalisation and also underscored the need to rationalise the sales tax structure across the country.

The chief ministers of all the states will meet the finance minister Yashwant

Sinha in the capital today to thrash out various issues related to taxation such

as sales tax and value added tax, Mankad said.

Currently, due to the federal nature of the government, the sale tax structure is decided by each state government while the broad taxes are the Centre's prerogative.

"Reforms have to spread across all state to have an overall impact on the economy," Mankad added.

 

He said the liberalisation process should also include other sectors such as social reforms and also stressed that the economic reforms would be incomplete unless it does not filter into reforms in civil services and bureaucratic level.
