The Uttar Pradesh electricity board records a negative return of 20 per cent against the statutory minimum of 3 per cent, according to a PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) study.

According to a study, the boards commercial losses, excluding subsidy, increased from Rs 980 crore in 1994-95 to Rs 1,495 crore in 1995-96 and the rate of return is minus 20 per cent.

Except for the performance of Anpara Thermal Power Station (TPS), the others need to improve their performance by 15-20 percentage points in the next 2-3 years to reduce losses which stand at Rs 1,000 crore a year, PHDCCI said. The study has projected a load demand of 7,000-8,000 mw in up during the next 2-3 years.

No additional capacity is expected to be commissioned during this period, and peaking shortages are likely to go up to about 35 per cent, with the overall energy shortage likely to touch 15-20 per cent in the same period, the study warns.
