Yadav Rules Out Changes In Sugar Licensing Policy

Food minister Devendra Prasad Yadav informed the Rajya Sabha that 23 proposals were received from Madhya Pradesh.

He told Satish Pradhan in a written reply that the country produced 146.43 lakh tonnes of sugar in 1994-95 against only 98 lakh tonnes in the previous year. He said the sugar stock till July 1996 was over 104 laktonnes.

Hugar mills had crushed nearly 1,670 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in 1995-96 against 1,476 lakh tonnes in the previous year.

The minister also informed that the government proposed to table the Gian Prakash Committee report during the current session in both the Houses.

 

The committee was set up to inquire into the sugar shortage in the country in 1993-94.
