Commonwealth Games Day 1 Highlights: Sharath Kamal and Anahat Singh shine

The Indian cricket team did lose a close game against Australia. But apart from that, India did well in sports it was supposed to do well. It won in women's hockey, TT, Badminton, Squash and Boxing

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Renuka Singh Thakur gets India three quick wickets

 
Defending the total of 154, India have started off well as Renuk singh Thakur has given two early blows to Australia in the form of Alyssa Healy and the Aussie skipper Meg Lanning. In the thyroid over, Australia’s score read 20-2. India also wasted a review by taking it on an LBW call when the ball was clearly pitching outside leg. 
 
However, in the same third over, Renuka struck again and bowled Mooney played down to give Australia a third blow.

India’s Shiva Thapa beat arch-rival Pakistan’s Suleman Baloch 5-0 by bagging a unanimous decision from all judges in the Round of 32 of the Men’s Over 60kg-63.5kg (Light Welter) weight category to give a rampaging start to India in the boxing ring.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Indian cricket team lose the plot, finish at 154-8

 
The Indian women’s cricket team, after being 105-3 in 14 overs, lost the plot in the slog overs and could manage to add only 49 runs in the last six overs after losing five wickets. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian side has now set a target of 155 for the Australian team to score and win the match.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Srihari Natraj qualifies for Semi-Final

 
India’s Srihari Natraj brought the much-needed good news from the country’s swimming contingent as he finished third in the Men's 100m Backstroke - Heat 4 and qualified for the semi-finals of the event. 
 
Earlier in the day, Sajan Prakash and Kushagra Rawat had both disappointed in 50 Metre Butterfly and 400 meters freestyle as they failed to move to the next round after finishing last in their respective heats.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: England claim first gold, it comes in Triathalon

 
Men's Individual Sprint Distance Final results are out and England have claimed the first gold of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022. The home team’s star triathlete Alex Yee. He clocked a timing of 50:34
 
He finished the swim leg down in 16th place but made up good ground on the bike to begin his favoured leg, the run, in 5th place and closing in on the leading pack headed up by New Zealand's Hayden Wilde. 
 
As always he ran a fantastic 5k, assuming 2nd place and closing in on Wilde overlap one before they jostled for the lead in the final lap. But within sight of the finish line, Wilde was told he would have to take a 10-second transition penalty and Yee was able to pull away to take the win.
 
In the same event, two Indians were participating as well. Adarsh Muralidharan Nair Sinimol finished 30th with a total timing of one hour and two seconds. Another Indian in the fray, Vishwanath Yadav finished 33rd with a total timing of One hour, two minutes and 52 seconds.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Indian women’s cricket team starts off well

 
The Indian Women’s cricket team have started well against Australia in the group stage match where they have put on 105-3 in the first 14 overs and Jemimah Rodriguez and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur looks stelled to take the Indian innings forward in the last six overs and finish big. 
 
Earlier in the day, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, India scored 25 for the first wicket in the fourth over before Mandhana was dismissed. Shafali Verma then took the anchor role and scored a brilliant 48 off just 33 balls before being dismissed. Yastika Bhatia was, unfortunately, run out early in her innings.

Participating in the Men's 400m Freestyle - Heat 3 event, India’s Kushagra Rawat finished eighth with timing of 3:57.45 and failed to move to the medal round

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: Indian Women’s Table Tennis team thrash South Africa 3-0

 
While Lawn bowls was a gloomy affair, the Indian Women’s Table Tennis team started in a flawless fashion in their group stage match as they defeated South Africa 3-0. 
 
Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennison beat the women’s doubles South African pair of Lailaa Edwards and Danisha Patel 11-7, 11-7, 11-5
 
Manika Batra was up next and she defeated South Africa’s Musfiquh Kalam 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 to make it 2-0 in favour of India. Sreeja Akula then finished the tie with a 3-0 win over Danisha Patel.

Commonwealth Games 2022 Day 1 Live Updates: What is Lawn Bowls?

 
Lawn bowls involve rolling a bowl down the green (stretch) with the aim to get it as close as possible towards ‘the jack’ - which is the designated target. Getting one’s bowls closer to the jack than the opponent/opposition team wins more points. There are four formats in lawn bowling, singles, pairs, triples and fours, named according to the number of players in each team. There are separate men’s and women’s medal events for each. In singles matches, the first to 21 points wins the tie. In all the other formats, bowls are rolled down from 18 different ends and the team with more points after both teams have taken their turns win. (Info courtesy: Olympics.com)
