PITCH REPORT: It is a belter of wicket

A straight hit is around 79-80 metres at Southampton. Third-man and fine-leg are short, so are the square boundaries. Teams will look to protect the shorter boundaries today, forcing batsman to play straighter. "A beauty," says Ramiz Raza looking at the pitch. "Brown tinge, good for batting. Will spin, although the pitch won't powder. See off the first 5 overs and then bat. Look out for the straight hits!"

Kohli on cusp of becoming fastest to 20,000 international runs

India skipper Virat Kohli will have the chance to add another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest batsman to score 20,000 international runs when he takes strike against Afghanistan in their World Cup tie at the Rose Bowl in Southampton on Saturday.

Kohli currently has 19, 896 runs to his name and is just 104 runs short of the record that legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar holds together with West Indies great Brian Lara.

If Kohli manages to score 104 runs against Afghanistan, he will reach the 20,000-international run milestone in 415 innings (131 in Tests, 222 in ODIs and 62 in T20Is).

Tendulkar and Lara, both had reached the milestone in 453 innings, followed by former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting who scored 20,000 runs in 468 innings.

The 30-year-old run-machine has been in great form in the ongoing tournament. After getting out cheaply against South Africa in the World Cup opener, Kohli scored 82 runs against Australia and 77 against Pakistan.

Interestingly, during the innings against Pakistan at Old Trafford on June 16, Kohli also became the fastest batsman to score 11,000 ODI runs.

Shankar appears for fitness test, says hopeful of playing

Injured all-rounder Vijay Shankar is "hopeful" of playing India's next World Cup encounter against Afghanistan as the pain inflicted by a Jasprit Bumrah toe-crusher has subsided.

Shankar took a short fitness test in which he was made to do some running and also bowled a few balls under the supervision of physio Patrick Farhart and trainer Shankar Basu. It couldn't be ascertained whether the physio and the trainer were happy with his progress.

There have been instances in the past where a player, who has attended a pre-match press conference hasn't made it to the playing XI.

Shankar's responded to queries over his inclusion in monosyllables.

Are you feeling better? "Personally, I've got a lot better," he quipped.

Much better? was a follow-up question and "yeah" was the short reply.

The next question was much straighter. Will you be able to play? "Yeah, hopefully," was all that the Tamil Nadu all-rounder said.

Bumrah's yorkers can be lethal and Shankar said he expected that.

"Actually, when you play someone like Bumrah, you always expect that. Still, sometimes we do miss that," he smiled when asked if he expected a delivery like that.
