This goal, the first one for India has come courtesy of a great move that was built in the midfield and the left flank between Jarmanpreet, Nilkanta Sharma and Harmanpreet. After Harmanpreet put the ball in the striking circle, Abhishek got one touch to settle it and with the second shot, went for a powerful forehand and into the post it rammed, giving India the lead.

The Indian team started the World Cup on opening day with a great win against Spain, beating the Red Sticks 2-0. In the next game, they drew with a fiercely competitive England team 0-0 to keep the hopes of topping the group alive. They however were not at their best in the game against Wales and in an attempt to score quickly, they were left gasping and could only manage to win the game 4-2 and finish in the second position in the points table. 

 

To get to the quarterfinals, the Men in Blue needed to beat New Zealand in the crossovers. The Blacksticks had finished third in their group by losing even to Malaysia. Even after leading 3-1 in the game, India succumbed to pressure and conceded two goals in the last 16 minutes to finish the match 3-3. It went into Shoot-Out and India lost 5-4.
