KXIP physio reveals Gayle's secret for longevity

While cricketers like India skipper Virat Kohli are regularly seen hitting the gym and lifting weights to work on their fitness, someone like Universe Boss Chris Gayle is hardly seen doing weight training. But at 39 years and 197 days, he is one of the oldest players plying his trade in the Indian Premier League. So how does he match the fitness of players who are almost 8-10 years younger to him?

Speaking to news agency, Kings XI Punjab physio Brett Harrop revealed that Yoga was one of the secrets behind Gayle still managing to maintain his fitness and helping him take on the best of bowlers with aplomb on the cricket field. In fact, even in the ongoing IPL, he has shown form with scores of 79, 20 and 40 before he missed the last game against Delhi Capitals.

"He has to spend more time in terms of recovery and flexibility in getting himself ready for games. We work keeping in mind his range of movement and mobility side of things like stretching and yoga exercises to keep the mobility going. He also does have to maintain a certain amount of strength and it is also individualised.

"So, for someone like Chris who is naturally strong and on the flip-side also quite a stiff athlete -- the reason why he gets a lot of power -- his particular area of focus is maintaining the range of movement. He has the natural strength. He is not trying to develop greater strength as it isn't a long term plan with him. It is about getting through each game and season," he explained.

Sam Curran sees himself a better bowler after maiden IPL stint

Young England all-rounder Sam Curran has already made a name for himself with his sharp inswingers and currently in the company of senior India pacer Mohammad Shami at the KXIP camp, the 20-year-old sees himself improving significantly after his maiden stint in the IPL. Curran, who produced a man-of-the-match performance in only his second Test -- against India at Edgbaston last year, has been making rapid strides since then. KXIP paid a hefty Rs 7.2 crore for his services this season and he repaid the faith by taking a hat-trick against Delhi Capitals. "My first IPL and it has been a very good experience so far, playing in Indian conditions and in front of massive crowds. There is so much to learn from established names and even the ones who have not played international cricket," Curran told PTI.

A top-heavy Sunrisers Hyderabad are seeking to sort their middle-order woes against Kings XI Punjab as the two teams eye a return to winning ways in the Indian Premier League. Both Sunrsiers and Kings XI have garnered six points after three wins from five games but the Hyderabad outfit is placed second in the eight-team standings on account of a better run rate. But, having suffered defeats in their previous games, both Sunrisers and Kings XI would be desperate to get back to winning ways.

While Sunrisers lost by 40 runs against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on Saturday while chasing a below-par 136, Kings XI were beaten by 22 runs by Chennai Super Kings.Sunrisers have been threatening in their first three games when David Warner and Jonny Bairstow stitched century-plus stands but once the duo got out cheaply, the Hyderabad team's middle-order looked in complete disarray.
