Rahul Chahar on cousin Deepak Chahar

It was on his cousin Deepak's advice that he took up leg spin bowling, Chahar said.

"I did not have so much talent or strength to be a fast bowler. 'Bhaiya' (brother) only suggested that I start to bowl leg spin," said Chahar when asked how he took to wrist spin while Deepak was a pace bowler.

Chahar said playing for Mumbai Indians was his dream and representing the three-time IPL champions was like playing for India.

"When I was a kid, my dream was to play for Mumbai Indians. When I debuted for Mumbai Indians for the first time, it was a great feeling -- something that you get while donning the India jersey as well," he said.

Rahul Chahar looks up to Tahir as guide

As a child Rahul Chahar idolised legendary Australian leg spinner Shane Warne but now the Mumbai Indians wrist spinner admires Chennai Super Kings' Imran Tahir and consults the wily South African bowler for help when the need arises.

"When I was a kid, I would follow (Shane) Warne. Now, it's Imran Tahir. He brings in variation and, no matter how the wicket or the conditions are, he generates turn. He knows how to bowl in every condition," said Chahar, who has picked up 10 wickets in the IPL so far, on the eve of MI's final league match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

Chahar, whose first cousin Deepak plays for reigning champions Chennai Super Kings, said he seeks advice from Tahir whenever he had a problem in his bowling.

"I have his contact number. Whenever I have a problem, I call him up and he guides me. He always helps me. When I went to England with the India U-19 team (in 2017), I did not know how to deliver in those conditions. It is difficult to grip the ball there, and he told me to put some sand and tackle the situation," recalled Chahar, seen as a future India prospect.

Gill grabbed opportunity with both hands: Karthik

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Kings XI Punjab by seven wickets to keep their chances alive of making it to the playoffs in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Chasing 184, KKR rode on the unbeaten half century from Shubhman Gill as they easily crossed the line with 12 balls to spare at the IS Bindra Stadium on Friday night. Gill, who opened the batting with Chris Lynn, remained unbeaten on 65 off 49 balls, his innings laced with five fours and two sixes.

After the match, KKR captain Dinesh Karthik praised the 19-year-old, saying the Punjab batsman, who has been promoted to open in the innings in place of Sunil Narine in recent matches, has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. "It's fair that we have given Gill a chance at the top of the order, and he has grabbed the opportunity with both hands," said Karthik in the post-match presentation ceremony.

The KKR skipper further said he was not happy with his bowlers and fielders during the first innings and that's why he decided to show his anger. When Punjab were batting, there were moments when Karthik was seen shouting and screaming at his bowlers. "I wasn't too happy with what the bowlers and the fielders were doing, so I thought I should let the boys know what I felt at that time," said Karthik. "It is rare, not many people have seen me angry. If I feel I need to be angry to get the best out of the boys, then maybe."

KKR won first match in 2 years when they met earlier at Eden Gardens

In match 47 of VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL 2019), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) snapped their six-match losing streak with a 34-run win over Mumbai Indians in a high-scoring IPL game that saw brutal stroke play from power-hitters of both teams. Kolkata Knight Riders batsmen fired on all cylinders to post the IPL 2019's highest total, 232 for two, after sensational knocks from Shubman Gill (75 off 45) and Andre Russell (80 not out off 40). At 58 for four, Mumbai were down and out but Hardik Pandya reignited their hopes with a breathtaking 91 off 34 balls. In due course he completed fastest IPL 2019 half century in 17 balls. In the end, Pandya's dismissal in the 18th over sealed the game in KKR's favour as Mumbai ended at 198 for seven. The Indian all-rounder's cracking innings comprised nine sixes and six fours. The much needed win keeps KKR alive in IPL 2019 as they now have 10 points from 12 matches. Mumbai remain in third spot with 14 points from 12 games.

Staring at elimination, the embattled KKR got off to a fiery start with Shubman Gill (76) and Chris Lynn (54) putting on a 96-run opening stand, their highest this season, after Rohit Sharma opted to bowl in his 100th match as captain. Russell, KKR's biggest impact player of the season, was finally seen higher up the order at No 3. The West Indies power-hitter ensured that KKR finished on a high with an unbeaten effort. Russell hammered six fours and eight sixes including one off the last ball after he denied a couple of singles to skipper Dinesh Karthik in the last over as KKR creamed 75 runs from the last five overs and scored 135 in the final 10.

Fielding let down Mumbai Indians big time with both Lynn and Russell dropped early in their innings by Kieron Pollard and Evin Lewis respectively. The top-order batting was all about the sheer class of the 19-year-old Gill, who showed why he is billed as the future star of Indian cricket. Gill smashed six fours and four sixes en route to his second half-century of the season and forged a crucial stand with Russell. The duo shared 62 runs from 35 balls of which Gill had a share of 34, while Russell scored 24. Gill was at his best against Rahul Chahar and three of his four sixes came against the leg-spinner.

Such was the sheer class of Gill that Russell was glad to play second fiddle and was six off 12 balls after being dropped on one. On a belter of a track, KKR openers got off to a sensational start and survived the powerplay without losing a wicket for their highest opening stand -- 96 -- this season. Slow to start with, Lynn was 18 off 15 balls when Kieron Pollard spilled a chance from the Aussie at mid-off. Lynn took off from there on, hammering the spin duo of Krunal Pandya and Chahar to race to his fourth IPL fifty this season off just 27 balls.

Preview

Their play-off chances hung, Kolkata Knight Riders will keep no stone unturned as they take on Mumbai Indians with a prayer on their lips in a must-win Indian Premier League game on Sunday.

KKR defeated Kings XI Punjab to keep their play-off hopes alive till the last leage game given RCB defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad yesterday. Placed fourth, SRH have a net run-rate of +0.577, which is comparatively better than fifth placed KKR's +0.173. But with one game to go, KKR now need to win today's match to make it to the playoffs.  However MI would like to carry on the winning momentum as 18 points and a better net run-rate than both first placed Chennai Super Kings and third placed Delhi Capitals will give them two shots at qualifying for the final.
