Tokyo Olympics: Organisers revoke accreditation of 6 people for violating COVID-19 protocols

So far six people have had their accreditation revoked for egregious offenses at the ongoing Olympics, Toshiro Muto the CEO of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee confirmed on Sunday.

Regarding incidents of participants being punished for violating the "playbook" -- a set of rules for athletes, staff, and media members -- Muto confirmed that so far six people have had their accreditation revoked for egregious offenses, as reported by Kyodo News.

The six consist of four contractors who were arrested prior to the Games opening for alleged cocaine use, and two Georgian judokas who broke COVID-19 protocols by leaving the athletes' village to go sightseeing.

A further eight people have had their accreditation suspended, four made to write "letters of commitment," and 10 given a warning, according to Muto.

Olympics hockey: Nothing to lose for Indian women in QF against Australia

The Indian women's hockey team meets Australia in the Olympic Games hockey quarterfinals here on Monday and the girls can play without any pressure as they have already made history by entering the knockout stages of the Olympics for the first time.

The team had left Indian shores for Tokyo with the target of reaching the quarters and they managed that by finishing fourth with two wins and three defeats in the six-team Pool A.

The Indian women's team had spent some anxious hours after they ended their engagements in the preliminary Group A with six points following a 4-3 win over South Africa as they waited for the result of the match between defending champions Great Britain and Ireland.

A victory for Ireland would have ended their hopes as the Irish would have made it to the quarterfinals on better goal difference as both teams would have been level on six points with two wins each.

But that was not to be as Britain defeated Ireland 2-0, paving the way for India's entry into the quarterfinals.

Boxers' rhythm affected by Covid lockdown, will focus on mental strength: BFI Prez

There will be greater focus on making Indian boxers mentally stronger for high-pressure events like the Olympics, Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh told PTI, ruling out any "knee jerk reactions" to the mixed bag of performances at the ongoing Games in Tokyo.

An unprecedented nine Indian boxers -- five men and four women -- made the cut for the shopwiece with Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) securing the lone medal, India's first in nine years, by advancing to the semifinals.

Handed tricky draws, the men, however, could log just one win -- through debutant super heavyweight Satish Kumar -- while world no.1 Amit Panghal (52kg) was among those who lost in the opening round.

"Definitely it is not what was expected. I feel particularly bad about the defeats of (an injured) Vikas (Krishan) and Amit," Singh said in a telephonic conversation from Tokyo, there to assess the campaign.

"Then Mary (Kom) lost by the narrowest of margins (in her pre-quarters). So it has been a mixed bag but look at the upside, we got a medal after nine years and it can get better," he added.

India did not win a medal at the 2016 Olympics where none of the female boxers from the country could even qualify. Only three men had made it to the main draw back then.

I will continue to shoot in three events, including 25m: Manu Bhaker

Seeking to steer away from "negativity", Indian pistol ace Manu Bhaker on Saturday said she will continue to shoot in three events, including the 25m, and vowed to make a strong comeback after enduring a hat-trick of heartbreaks in her maiden Olympics.

Speaking to PTI after arriving from Tokyo, the 19-year-old Manu said there was negativity around her shooting and preparations in the run-up to the Olympics, due to the conflict with former coach Jaspal Rana, who had insisted that she withdraws from the 25m pistol event.

"I will continue to shoot in 25m event," Manu said as she readied to leave the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

While the controversy and the negativity around her dispute with Rana did have an impact on her performance, wanting to win medals at all cost made it worse, the Youth Olympics and Commonwealth Games gold medallist said.

Besides being "leg pulled", Manu said she was regularly told to "withdraw" from 25m as she was not "up to the mark" in that event.

Manu had earned her Tokyo quota during the ISSF World Cup in Munich.

"Yes, there was negativity as my mother and father were also forced to get involved in this whole issue. Questions like why my mother is with me in Bhopal (for training and trials) and why is my father accompanying would be asked by him. So, there was negativity."

Among other things, there were technical problems which "were not addressed" by the former coach.

She also made it clear that she did not send any message to Rana during the ISSF World Cup in Delhi in March this year, saying that it was sent by her mother who was "getting worried" about her daughter.

The message Rana received was, "Ab to mil gayee na tassalli" (now you must be content) after Manu settled for a bronze when she was expected to win a gold medal.

Rana paraded at the Karni Singh shooting ranges with the message imprinted on the back of his white T-shirt, forcing the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) to intervene.

Given the circumstances, the shooter said the NRAI and its president Raninder Singh did all they could to arrive at the best possible solution as the Games approached, including bringing in former India shooter Ronak Pandit as her coach.

"The NRAI was looking for the best solution available to the whole problem, to all the problems, and they also took us into confidence," she said.

On the brighter side, Manu said she has come back with plenty of learnings from her first appearance at the Olympics.

"I definitely gained a lot of experience. Got lot of warmth from people, from my teammates. It will, hopefully, help me in future to prepare and perform. I am young and have a long career ahead. I tried my best this time," Manu, a multiple World Cup gold medallist, said.
