Rejuvenated India eye win against Argentina to seal QF berth in Olympic men's hockey

A resurgent Indian men's hockey team would look to seal a quarterfinal berth but defending champions Argentina won't be an easy challenge to overcome when the two sides clash in their penultimate pool match of the Olympics here on Thursday.

With two wins out of three games, world no.4 India are sitting pretty at the second spot in Pool A, which is being headed by the unbeaten Australians which boast of a perfect record till now from three games.

Argentina, currently ranked seventh in the world, are placed at the fourth spot with one win, a draw and a loss respectively.

After a hard-fought 3-2 win over New Zealand, the Indians, who are in pursuit of their first Olympic medal in more than four decades, were drubbed 1-7 by Australia before the eight-time champions bounced back to outplay Spain 3-0.

India's last of the eight Olympic golds came way back in 1980 Moscow Games.

The Los Leones, on the other hand, drew their first game 1-1 with Spain, won 2-1 against hosts Japan and lost 2-5 to Australia.

The 3-0 win over Spain has definitely raised the confidence level of the Manpreet Singh-led side, especially after the morale-shattering loss to Australia but according to India's chief coach Graham Reid, a lot of improvement is needed in every aspect of the game.

16 new Olympics-related COVID-19 cases, but no athlete and none from Games Village

The Olympic Games organisers announced 16 new COVID-19 cases associated with the event on Wednesday but none of them were athletes.

The fresh additions took the total number of Games-related cases to 169.

It is for the first time in four days that no COVID-19 cases were reported among Olympic athletes.

Out of the 16, four are Games-concerned personnel, two from the media, nine contractors and one volunteer. But, none of the 16 were staying at the Olympic Village.

According to reports, two cases previously reported proved to be negative and were removed from the cumulative total.

The figures were released a day after Tokyo reported a record 2,848 daily coronavirus infections.

The total number cases in the Games village currently stands at 19.

The organisers said 38,484 people from abroad had entered Japan for the Games as of Monday.

Dutch tennis player Jean-Julien Rojer was the last to withdraw from his event after testing positive for the virus.

Rojer and his doubles partner Wesley Koolhof, who were scheduled to play Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus of New Zealand, pulled out of their second-round match on Monday following Rojer's positive test result.

The contingents that have been hit by COVID-19 after landing in Tokyo include Czech republic, the USA, Chile, South Africa and the Netherlands among others.

Tropical storm dumps rain on northern Japan, spares Olympics

A tropical storm dumped rain in parts of northern Japan on Wednesday after moving away from the Tokyo region and relieving the Olympic host city of a feared disruption to the games.

In Sendai, some trains were delayed and pedestrians braced themselves against the wind on the city streets.

Tropical Storm Nepartak has caused no damage so far, but the Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents to take caution against mudslides.

The storm had winds of 65 kilometers per hour (40 mph) and was expected to weaken and move off the western coast of Akita by Wednesday night.

The season's eighth typhoon for Japan was near the city of Ishinomaki in Miyagi prefecture on Wednesday morning, the agency said. Ishinomaki is about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

Nepartak was the first landfall in Miyagi prefecture since 1951 when the weather agency started compiling typhoon statistics. Miyagi was part of the northeastern region deeply devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The storm was moving northwest at about 30 kph (18 mph) and up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) of rain was forecast across the northern region in the next 24 hours.

It moved further north than initially projected, causing only limited impact on the Olympics, with some events such as surfing and rowing rescheduled. Tuesday's women's soccer match in Miyagi prefecture was held as scheduled.
