Right corners a big worry for Bengal Warriors

There have been two glaring weaknesses for the Bengal Warriors defence in PKL 6. One was at left cover with Ziaur Rahman. The other was at right corner.
Shrikant Tewthia played the first 4 matches at right corner for Bengal Warriors, but started to struggle. He became an easy target for the left-side raiders and Manoj Dhull was introduced in their last match against Jaipur Pink Panthers. He was even worse and constantly got targeted by Deepak Niwas Hooda.
Vijin Thangadurai has already been preferred over Ziaur Rahman at left cover as he’s more dependable.
Whether Bengal Warriors bring back Shrikant Tewthia in the right corner will be interesting. He has a 3-7 record against Pardeep Narwal.
For a team like Bengal Warriors that relies on making as few failed tackles as possible, they might choose to go back to Shrikant.

Onus on Manjeet and Deepak Narwal in absence of Pardeep Narwal

The raiding support for Pardeep Narwal had been reducing in recent games, but against Bengaluru Bulls both Manjeet and Deepak Narwal stepped up. Deepak was in fact brought back to the starting lineup after not featuring for 4 games.
Manjet picked up a SUPER 10, the first of his career, while Deepak Narwal scored 8 raid points. This was one of the reasons the game was close despite Pardeep Narwal only scoring 3 raid points.
Manjeet had struggled in the last 4 games before the Bengaluru match. He had scored only 11 raid points from 33 raids in those 4 matches.
So his return to form will be a welcome relief for Patna. With him and Deepak Narwal’s support, Patna may be able to manage the dip in form from Pardeep Narwal.

PKL 2018, Day 22: Patna Pirates vs Bengal Warriors

Patna Pirates' defense in their previous match

In yesterday’s game though, the Patna defence produced a good collective performance to pick up 13 tackle points, their second-best tackle points tally of the season (14 vs Jaipur the highest). 5 players had at least 2 tackle points to their name.
o Still, their failed tackle count was 1.5x as compare to successful once. (11 success, 18 failed)
But Maninder Singh happens to have a very good record against Jaideep (10-1), Patna’s best defender this season.
Jang Kun Lee, Bengal Warriors’ second raider has also picked up his game in the last 2 matches – 16 raid points at a strike rate of 57.
Patna will need to produce another good collective performance to stop Maninder and Lee.

MANINDER SINGH vs WEAK PATNA DEFENCE

Lead raider of the Bengal Warriors Maninder Singh has gotten off to a good start again in PKL 6 and is averaging almost 10 raid points a match.
Maninder Singh is going to be facing a Patna defence which is among the weakest in the competition this season. Last season he was unstoppable against Patna Pirates.
He had Super 10s in all the 3 matches that he played against Patna last season, scoring a whopping 45 raid points from 3 matches.

Surjeet Singh performance in PKL 2018 so far

Surjeet Singh has easily been the best defender for Bengal Warriors. In their last match he scored a HIGH 5 to lead them to victory over Jaipur Pink Panthers. He has 2 HIGH 5s this season.
Surjeet Singh has 18 HIGH 5s in PKL which is second highest. Only Manjeet Chhillar and Nada (19) has more.
Out of those 18 times, Surjeet’s team has lost only two matches. 10 of these HIGH 5s have come for Bengal Warriors out of which his team has lost only once.
One of their best performances this season came against Rahul Chaudhari of Telugu Titans where they kept him to just 2 raid points in the match. Both those points were Bonus Points.
It will be interesting to see if they can repeat such a performance against a raider like Pardeep Narwal who seems to be struggling in the last few games.

Pardeep Narwal performance in numbers

Pardeep has not scored even 5 raid points in the last two matches. The last time this happened was back in PKL 4 (versus Bengaluru and U Mumba).
The main reason being increase in his raid failure rate this season, which has gone up by 5% from previous season (PKL 5 – 19% and PKL 6 – 24%)
o He has 5 failed raids in each of his last 3 games.
The leading raid point scorer in Pro Kabaddi has also been below his usual best in Super Tackle situations this season. There has been a sharp decline in his strike rate in these situations from 75% in PKL Career to only 51% in PKL 6.
o He has 9 failed raids in Super Tackle situation this season, which is the most by any player in PKL 6

Player Battle: PARDEEP NARWAL vs SURJEET SINGH

Pardeep Narwal has scored 95 raid points so far this season and is the third leading raid point scorer of PKL 6. He is averaging 10.5 raid points a game.
However, in his last two matches he has not scored more than 5 raid points
o Against Telugu Titans he was restricted to just 4 raid points from his 9 raids. He also missed the last 15 minutes after being taken off because of an injury to his left hand. Time off court in this match was 10 minutes and 50 seconds out of the 25 minutes played.
o Against Bengaluru Bulls he had just 3 raid points from 12 raids and was kept very quiet. The hand injury seemed to be affecting his raiding. Off court for 11 minutes and 54 seconds in this match.
