Shailesh Shah, group president and director, JSW Group, is candid about the fact that his little son is already familiar with most gadgets and gizmos. Shah also tells us that he’s looking forward to bringing home a hi-tech communication system that will ensure connectivity with his family at all times.
What’s your latest gadget acquisition?
I had read rave reviews about Buddibot, a communication tool designed to keep everyone in the family connected through a Wi-Fi-enabled robotic webcam. As I travel quite a lot for my professional assignments, I thought it would be great to have it in place that would allow me to stay connected with my family.
How is Buddibot better than a normal PC?
It works with WowWee Technologies’s Rovio mobile webcam that is Wi-Fi-enabled and can be controlled remotely from anywhere in the world using a web-enabled device. It can move in any direction which makes it easier to interact with others. It also comes equipped with a self-docking system that aids in timely recharge.
Isn’t it too complicated to set up?
Not at all. I just had to unpack and insert the battery pack, follow the installation process using the bundled CD and connect it to the Internet via my wireless home network. Rovio, the webcam, had to be attached to the docking unit with one single click that enabled its continuous charging.
What is the next gadget on your shopping list?
I want to set up a nice home theatre system with a large display screen and a projector. But I want to install the display myself, without any technical support. Presently, the task seems very cumbersome but I’m hopeful that I’ll do it in the near future.
Do you usually like install gadgets yourself?
Most of the times, I do like it. I also make it a point to go through the user manuals just to make sure that nothing goes wrong in the installation process. Reading the manuals, in fact, is very important.
How often do you help your kids with their gadgets?
When I recently got my son his first radio controlled toy, the speed with which he installed the batteries and got the toy running baffled me. Going by that episode, I can tell you, he won’t really need my help for too long and will manage everything on his own.
Is there anything that you would like to change when it comes to gadgets?
While setting up Rovio, I had to learn a lot about Wi-Fi router settings. When a gadget has to run on wireless networks, there are a lot of settings that need to be configured before using it. I prefer such devices to be easy plug-and-play systems. Novices find it difficult to figure out gadgets.
