Adapt to typing

Anulekha Agarwal
Just when I decided it was about time to get myself a new smartphone, I chanced upon this app on Google Play Store that made me change my mind.  Sheer serendipity!

I never realised a simple keyboard for my Android phone could juice up the texting experience so much. Although there are umpteen keyboard apps available, there are multiple reasons why KeyPoint Technologies’ Adaptxt keyboard app for Android phones and tablets stands out.

Adaptxt allows users to customise almost every aspect of their keyboard. It offers various themes like Holi, Cricket, Basketball, St. Patricks and Easter, which can be downloaded for 99 cents (Rs 55) each. One can change anything from the font style, background picture, keyboard colour, font colour to shape of keys. You can even adjust the height of your keys by using the Keyboard Customization tool.

With over 78 language dictionaries, that include Hinglish, Banglish, Marathinglish and Nepalish, and 35 industry-specific dictionaries, like telecom, legal, medical and business to mention a few, Adaptxt is definitely a compelling app.

I love the share key which enables me to post messages on Facebook, Twitter and other social media just at a click. I can press and hold a word in the suggestion bar to instantly learn more about it on Wikipedia.

The ATR or Automatic Text Replacement feature saves you from typing frequently used text over and over again by setting shortcuts for predefined text. For example, I have saved ‘ brb’ as ATR with ‘be right back’ as its expansion. So every time I type ‘brb’, I can choose to expand it to ‘be right back’, without having to type it again.

Apart from learning your writing style, Adaptxt also removes accents and diacritics. Its voice recognition feature comes in handy while driving or whenever your hands are not free.

The problem, however, is that it eats up a lot of your memory. While the free app takes up 8.65 mb for downloading, using more than one language means giving out more space. With just one language downloaded, it is currently using 12.45 mb space in my phone. The other drawback is you have to shell out 99 cents for making all the in-app purchases.

Overall, Adaptxt is good enough to keep me hooked on my phone for some more time!
