Bollywood rules on YouTube

With 23 million unique YouTube users from India, as per Comscore data, Bollywood videos scored big in 2011. YouTube, which saw 48 hours of content uploaded every minute and more than one trillion playbacks that's about 140 views for every person on the earth, video streaming has truly arrived for the 100 million internet users in India.

From movie trailers, popular movie songs to nursery rhymes India enjoyed them all on YouTube. "Bollywood is big part of the YouTube experience in India. In 2011, Indians enjoyed a full range of content from full length movies, TV shows, live sports, music videos, movie trailers and much more," said Gautam Anand, director content partnerships, Google APAC.

 

He added that success of viral videos like Kolaveri Di, which garnered over 25 million views within a month of its release on YouTube, and the many versions that have followed, are an indicator of the impact of 100 million internet users in the country.

TV shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati (episode 40, in particular) claimed the title of most watched popular TV show video of the year with nearly 1.5 lakh views till date.

YouTube also compiled billions of queries that people typed into YouTube in 2011 to identify some of the fastest-rising search terms for each month.

Some of the most searched terms on YouTube in India were, Kolaveri Di, Bigg Boss 5 and IPL 2011 among others.
